Council awarded £69k community funding to support dementia awareness work
The District Council has been awarded £69k in funding to continue its dementia friendly communities work.
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) grant comes from a government fund which aims to support local authority led community projects to deliver solutions to embedded social issues.
In total 54 projects from across the UK will benefit from a share of the government’s £3.25 million cash boost.
The funding means that the Council will be able to employ three Dementia Enablers as outreach workers for a year to build on and extend the current dementia friendly communities work. The roles will be responsible for raising awareness of dementia amongst residents and with the help of partner organisations they will recruit a network of volunteers to enable the Forest of Dean to become more dementia friendly.
Andy Morgan-Watts, a Dementia Champion for the Forest of Dean said: “This funding means that we can now develop the work that we have already started in the district. The recruitment of three Dementia Enablers will further expand our support network in every parish through delivering training and seeking out new volunteers. This will help us to continue to raise awareness of dementia and to provide personalised support to some of the most vulnerable people in our community who may be currently struggling to manage.
“Dementia rates are rising exponentially, with a high percentage of people living alone. Through education and reaching out early, we can give people living with dementia the support they need to contribute to their community, so they can get involved and enjoy the things that are important to them, enabling them to live independently for as long as possible.
“If you feel that you would like to make a difference in your community by helping to raise awareness of dementia, then why not consider applying for one of the Dementia Enabler roles?
