Council approves free car parking days
On 12 October Cabinet agreed to waive parking charges in District Council owned car parks in Lydney, Coleford, Cinderford, Newent, Mitcheldean and Redbrook for up to six days a year.
For the remainder of 2017 the town and parish councils have three free parking days each and have chosen to use them to support their festive celebrations.
On various dates in the run up to Christmas, residents and visitors will be able to park for free in around 700 spaces across the district.
Parking charges will be suspended in Council owned car parks for the Christmas lights switch-on events on the following dates:
Lydney, Newent, Cinderford - Saturday 25 November
Mitcheldean - Friday 1 December
Coleford - Saturday 2 December
Further free parking dates will be as follows:
Lydney - Saturday 9 & 16 December
Newent - Saturday 23 December
Cinderford - Saturday 16 & 23 December
Coleford - Saturday 9 & 16 December
Mitcheldean - Saturday 9 & 16 December
Cllr Tim Gwilliam, Leader of the Forest of Dean District Council said: “We unanimously agreed the proposal to provide the Town and Parish Councils with up to six free parking days in a calendar year. We have done so to give certainty to the town and parish councils involved and remove the requirement to make specific requests for relaxation of the charges each year.
“We hope the dates chosen by the town and parish councils will encourage people to get involved with the Christmas lights switch on events and to visit the district’s shops to support local traders in the run up to Christmas.”
