Church on the Street launches Coleford Memory Café
Church on the Street volunteers have recently launched a memory café after attending a dementia awareness session delivered by one of the District Council’s Dementia Friendly Community Enablers.
The awareness session helped the Church on the Street volunteers to realise that they had the skills, knowledge and connections to support residents living with dementia and memory loss.
The Memory Café is held once a month in the Church on the Street shop in St John’s Street in Coleford.
The café provides a safe venue where people with dementia and their carers can relax and chat with other like-minded people, whilst enjoying refreshments.
Jane MacBean, a volunteer for Church on the Street said: “We’ve had a fabulous response to our memory café, with lots of people attending. We offer a really nice environment where people with dementia and their carers can come and enjoy themselves. We accept people for who they are and for where they are in their dementia journey.
“We want to let more people know about the café and welcome them to come along to our next session on the 26 March.”
Local resident, Philip Oliver added: “The volunteers encouraged me to come along to the café and I’m glad I did because I’ve really enjoyed myself. I’ve found that the café gives me an opportunity to socialise, meet new people and have fun.”
Debbie has been involved with the café from the start as a volunteer, she said: “We’re really pleased with the amount of people attending our café sessions. It’s nice to see people taking part in the activities, chatting to others and really enjoying themselves.”
Councillor Paul Hiett, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “Well done to the Church on the Street volunteers for setting up the café. It’s a fantastic initiative offering members of the community a safe place to meet right in the heart of one of the district’s main towns.”
The Coleford memory café meets on the fourth Monday of every month from 2.30pm to 4.00pm at The Church on the Street, 6a St John’s Street, Coleford.
The next café will be held on Monday 26 March at 2.30pm.
