Street Care & Cleaning

Street Cleaning and Litter

The council has a duty to keep its own land and public highways clear of litter and refuse.

Our contractor cleans the four town centres of Cinderford, Coleford, Lydney and Newent on a daily basis between 6am and 8am. Litter bins are emptied and huge amounts of fast food litter, bottles, chip paper, drink containers, cigarette ends, vomit and dog fouling are removed.

The suburbs of the towns, other Forest villages and roads across the district are also cleaned on a rotational basis. We also collect fly-tipped waste.

In addition a road-sweeping vehicle sweeps the road channels (gutters) of most kerbed roads to remove any grit, litter and general dirt that has collected there.

We collect in the region of 250 tonnes of litter per year from across the district, the equivalent of 31 double decker buses. The street wardens try to prevent littering through educational campaigns at events and school talks but if they do see someone dropping litter they have the powers under the Clean Neighbourhoods Act to issue fixed penalty notices with a fine of £75.

The council is also responsible for the removal of grafitti and fly-posting and can impose fines of £75 to those causing the problem. The street wardens can also serve notice requiring the removal of graffiti, flyers and posters within 28 days. If graffiti or fly-posting is not removed the council can remove and recover the cost of doing so.

To report a problem with litter, fly-posting, litter or graffiti please contact us on 01594 810000.

Dead Animals

The Forest of Dean District Council provides a service to remove dead animals from its own land and the public highway.  We remove wild animals such as badgers and foxes.  If boar or deer are found please contact the Forestry Commission to arrange for removal on 01594 833057.  Alternatively let us know and we will notify the Forestry Commission to organise removal.

If we receive a report of a domestic pet such as cat or dog, in the first instance we will try to find the owners through the pet’s collar or microchip.  If there is no identification and if the animal is not causing a hazard, we prefer to leave the animal for a short time to enable the owner to find their pet and dispose of it in the manner they would like.  We will collect these types of animals if left.

We do not collect any animal smaller than a domestic cat or dog; if you do find a dead animal of smaller size, you can either deal with it yourself by double bagging the animal and putting it in the domestic waste bin or leave the animal to decompose naturally.

If you find more than five dead swans, wild gulls, waders or ducks please contact the Defra Helpline on 08459 335577 (9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday). You will be asked for details of the birds and the location.

We do not remove farm animals (such as cows, sheep or pigs) and you should report any dead farm animals to the owner if known.  We also do not collect dead animals from private property.

Please be aware that we use a specialised team to remove dead animals and unless a road is being blocked, the dead animal may be left in place until our next scheduled visit to the area.
