What is Council Tax?
Council Tax is a property based tax payable on domestic (residential) homes. The council tax you pay goes towards local services provided by Gloucestershire County Council, the police, Forest of Dean District Council and Parish Councils. Council tax helps pay for local services, such as schools, libraries, policing and waste collections.

The Council receives money from the Government and income from Business Rates, although this is not enough to cover the whole cost of Council services. The difference is made up by the Council Tax.
One Council Tax bill is sent for each property, whether it is a house, flat, bungalow, mobile home or houseboat and whether it is owned or rented.
The intention of these pages, are to give an overview of the Council Tax system and to answer any questions that you may have.
Please contact the billing section of the Revenues Service on 01594 812532 or email if you have any further queries.
