Swine Flu

Preventing germs from spreading is still the key health protection message from the NHS. You can reduce the risk of catching or spreading influenza by following the hygiene advice – Catch It, Bin It, Kill It:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue whenever possible
  • Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully – bag and bin them
  • Maintain good hygiene – washing hands frequently with soap and water
  • Clean hard surfaces (e.g. kitchen worktops, door handles) frequently, using a normal cleaning product
  • Stay at home when you are sick – if you have a cough and a fever, it is best to rest at home, take medicines to relieve the symptoms and drink plenty of fluids.

The National Pandmic Flu Service has been launched. Instead of calling your GP surgery or NHS Direct, you can call 0800 1513 100 or go to to get a diagnosis. You will be taken through a series of questions which will help identify whether you have symptoms of swine flu and whether you need antiviral medication.

If antiviral medication is presrcibed a unique reference number will be allocated. Anyone who is presribed antiviral medication should ask a ‘flu friend’ who is not displaying flu like symptoms e.g. a relative, neighbour or friend; to collect the medication on their behalf from a selection of antiviral collection points (ACPs) throughout the County. Please do not attend the ACP yourself.

The Flu Friend will require the unique reference number, the patient’s ID and their own ID. Anyone attending an ACP without these three things will be asked to return home to collect them.

Anyone who visits an ACP and has not been through the National Pandemic Flu Service will be asked to use the Service before asking a flu friend to collect medication for them, if required.

As a District Council we have a number of critical services we need to deliver and to ensure that we are able to do this we have reviewed our Pandemic Influenza Plan.
