Single Person Discount

The full council tax bill for a property assumes that it is the main home of two adults. If it is the main home of only one adult (aged 18 or over) the bill is reduced by 25%.

If your circumstances change and you are no longer the only adult living in a property you must tell us straight away.
If you falsely claim a discount this is a criminal offence and you may face a penalty of at least £70 and/or be prosecuted in the magistrate’s court.
 

Status Discount

The full council tax bill for a property assumes that it is the main home of two or more adults. If a member of your household falls into one of the categories below, he/she will be disregarded for council tax purposes, in which case you may qualify for a 25% discount. Similarly, if there are 2 adults living in the property and they both fall into one of the categories below, a 50% discount may apply. However, if after disregarding such people, two or more adults still remain, no discount will be applicable.

(the application form for carers is applicable to people who care for someone with a disability who is not their husband, wife, partner or child under 18)
 

A number of other disounts are available for:

  • student nurses
  • youth training trainees
  • 18- and 19-year olds who are at, or who have just left, school or college
  • patients who now permanently live in hospital
  • people being looked after in care homes
  • people staying in certain hostels or night shelters
  • care workers working for low pay, usually charities
  • members of visiting forces and certain international institutions
  • foreign diplomats
  • members of religious communities (monks and nuns)
  • people in detention

Annexes Discount

From April 2014 a 50% discount may apply where an annexe is occupied by a relative of the council tax payer for the main property, or where it is used as part of the main property.

Empty Properties

An empty property is defined as a property which is unoccupied and unfurnished.
 
Class C – From 1 April 2015, a property which is unoccupied and unfurnished will receive a 25% discount.
Prior to April 2015, some empty properties which fall into Class C would have received an exemption from Council Tax for one month.
 
Class D – From 1 April 2013, an uninhabitable property which requires or is undergoing structural alteration or major repair works may receive a 25% discount for up to 12 months. After 12 months, no discount will apply.
 
Prior to April 2013, some empty properties which fall into Classes C and D would have received an exemption from Council Tax.

Second Homes

A second home is defined as a property that is furnished but is no-one’s main home. No discount will apply.
