Government Inspector approves Core Strategy and Cinderford Area Action Plan

A Planning Inspector has approved the district’s Core Strategy and Cinderford Northern Quarter Area Action Plan (AAP) which set out the planning framework for how the area will develop until 2026.
Release Date: Jan 13, 2012

A Planning Inspector has approved the district’s Core Strategy and Cinderford Northern Quarter Area Action Plan (AAP) which set out the planning framework for how the area will develop until 2026.

The Core Strategy is the main planning policy document for the district and contains the broad principles for sustainable development until 2026. The Cinderford AAP is a document which forms a blueprint for a specific area to the north-west of the town.

The Planning Inspector, appointed by Central Government, carried out a detailed public examination of the Core Strategy and AAP in October last year. The Inspector found that the council has sufficient evidence to support both the Core Strategy and the AAP and confirmed that both documents provide an appropriate basis for the planning in the area over the next 15 years. The Inspector was therefore happy for the documents to be adopted by the council.

Approval of the Cinderford AAP allows partners on the Cinderford Regeneration Board to deliver the planned regeneration. A key stage will be the construction of a new Northern Quarter spine road, unlocking the site for a mix of new, high quality commercial and residential development.

Nigel Gibbons, Forward Plan Manager at Forest of Dean District Council, said: “Having the Core Strategy approved is a big milestone for the district and a major step forward as it gives us an up-to-date background for making planning decisions.”

Wendy Jackson, the District Council’s Regeneration Manager added: “The Inspector’s findings mean that we can finally move the Northern Quarter project from the planning stage into the delivery phase. It will take time to deliver this exciting development but a lot of the ground work has already been done. Getting to this point has taken many years of hard work from all the partners on the Regeneration Board and of course the patience and support of Cinderford people. Together we’ll build something that puts Cinderford firmly on the map and helps revitalise the local economy.”

Both documents will now go to Cabinet and Full Council in February to be formally adopted.
