Olympic fever takes hold of Forest of Dean

Olympic fever is spreading across the district with leisure centres already seeing an increase in use and communities organising their own games.
Release Date: Aug 03, 2012

Olympic fever is spreading across the district with leisure centres already seeing an increase in use and communities organising their own games.

The five council run Forest leisure centres have special Season of Sport membership for adults and a holiday activities passport for children at the reduced price of £20.12 over the summer. The adult membership includes a free fitness suite induction, fitness suite usage, swimming, spin classes at Forest Leisure Coleford and Cinderford, plus use of the new Train Station training area and Steam Room at Forest Leisure Newent. The children’s passports include selected holiday play scheme activities plus swimming for the whole of the summer holidays.

Cllr Terry Hale, cabinet member for the Community said: “Our Season of Sport passport has been really popular so far as it’s such fantastic value. The Olympics as well as last week’s good weather seem to have got people wanting to get out and about and do more sport. As the Olympics go on and more people get inspired by sport we expect this popularity will continue.”

To take up the adult or junior Season of Sport offer visit your local leisure centre at Coleford, Lydney, Cinderford, Sedbury or Newent.

Community games events are also being organised with more towns and villages being encouraged to take on the Olympic spirit and organise their own games. Events could have lots of different sports available for people to try or even include a walk or run of 2012 metres.

Dave Lucas from Forest of Dean District Council who is working to promote Community Games events said: “So far two Community Games events have been held in the district this summer which have both been really successful. These included the Forest of Dean Athletic Club’s 30th anniversary where 300 people of all ages got involved. Community Games can also be incorporated in existing events – for example in Aylburton they combined it with their annual carnival celebration.

“There is some Health Inequalities funding available for activities to increase participation in sport which would help with these events.”

After the Olympics have finished on the weekend of 18/19 August an event is being planned to give people chance to have a go at various sports.
