Social enterprises across the country are gearing up for Social Saturday on 13 October.  This will highlight the businesses that are making a difference in their communities, trading for a social purpose and using commerce to create a more equal society.

In the Forest of Dean, a number of social enterprises will be celebrating the event, and Cabinet Members from the District Council will be visiting them on Friday 12 October to preview what they are offering and to find out more about the excellent work they are doing in the community.

The councillors will visit the following social enterprises:

Forest Food Hub

The Dean Forest Food Hub is like an online farmers market. Customers can order produce from the Forest of Dean area on a weekly basis, knowing they are getting high quality food, supporting local businesses and cutting down on their food miles.

Rewild Project

Their mission is to re-connect people to nature and their ancestral heritage through arts and crafts, growing food, outdoor learning and community-building projects.

16 Community Café, Coleford

Sixteen is a friendly welcoming cafe offering fresh meals made from local ingredients supplied by local businesses.

Forest Upcycling

The local charity for those who wish to donate used furniture in the Forest of Dean and Monmouthshire. Forest upcycling collects items for free.  They then sell on the items and use the funds to help and employ vulnerable people in the area.

Cllr Julia Gooch, Cabinet Member for Town Centres, Business Support and Jobs is one of the Councillors who will be visiting the enterprises on 12 October and is looking forward to the experience:

“Social Saturday is about championing businesses that are creating jobs while helping to promote the best ethical products on the market.  I urge everyone to support our local social enterprises and help change the way we all do business.  We are fortunate to have so many participants locally and their numbers are increasing as word gets around about the great things they can achieve.”
